Good Morning! On September 10, 1925, registered voters in the Curtiss-Bright town west of Miami voted to organize and incorporate the City of Hialeah — a Seminole-rooted name tied to the prairie land James H. Bright and aviator Glenn Curtiss had platted a few years earlier. Jack P. Grethen became the first mayor; the Florida Legislature confirmed the city that November. Hialeah Park’s racing season had already put the young town on the map that January. (City of Hialeah)

In This Issue: Florida sues Netflix over kids’ data, NTSB presses MIA crash pilots, and Sierra Club urges no on Amendment 3.

Florida Sues Netflix Over Kids’ Data and Ad Tracking

Attorney General James Uthmeier filed suit Wednesday in St. Johns County’s 7th Judicial Circuit alleging Netflix told Florida families a paid subscription meant an ad-free escape from Big Tech surveillance while collecting years of behavioral data — including on Kids Profiles — then commercializing it when ads launched in November 2022 (WLRN).

The complaint cites Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and Digital Bill of Rights and seeks a permanent injunction, civil penalties, deletion of deceptively collected Floridian data, and an end to designs the state says keep children watching; Netflix has said it will defend the case (ClickOrlando).

NTSB: MIA Cargo Crew Eyed a Go-Around; Pilots Interviewed

Federal investigators said Wednesday they interviewed the two pilots of 21 Air Flight 7598 (Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767) after FDR/CVR data showed the crew considered aborting the Sep 6 Runway 30 landing — with no recorded deployment of speed brakes or thrust reversers — before the jet overran and struck a cleaning van that killed 5 (Local 10).

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said the board remains on scene about a week; one of MIA’s four runways was still closed Wednesday after 2 runways reopened Tuesday night (NTSB).

Sierra Club Florida Urges No on Amendment 3

Sierra Club Florida on Wednesday joined the No campaign against November’s homestead property-tax Amendment 3, warning it would “effectively gut” local budgets for parks, stormwater, and storm-hardening as analysts project recurring local non-school revenue hits climbing toward about $11.86 billion (WLRN).

The measure needs 60% voter approval; Florida Realtors last week poured $10 million into Vote Yes on 3 while local officials and law enforcement groups warn of service cuts (Florida Politics).

Hillsborough Warns Dengue Fight Could Take Time

WFLA reported Wednesday that Hillsborough health and mosquito officials warn the county’s dengue outbreak may take time to slow even as aerial and ground treatments continue; Bay News 9 earlier cited at least 59 Hillsborough infections this year and joint helicopter missions with Pasco (WFLA).

Hillsborough’s spray-notification map lists ongoing adulticide missions with Sep 10–11 weather alternates; residents can sign up for alerts and follow the 3 Ds (dress, defend, dump standing water) (Hillsborough County).
